Belmont Hill defenseman Tyler Rubin has committed to playing college hockey at Princeton University, he announced via Twitter on Friday.
The '03 left-shot defenseman from Natick, Mass., has elite feet and is able to break pucks out of his own zone as well as any player in the region among this age group. As a sophomore in 2018-19, Rubin had two goals and six assists in 30 games played for Jeremiah McCarthy's team.
Rubin always had good feet, but he's grown some and become more explosive over the last eight or so months. He's had several impressive viewings in front of large numbers of scouts, including at the Mass. Festival, USA Hockey Select 16 Player Development Camp, Junior Battle of Boston, Tier 1 Labor Day Face Off, and Boston Junior Bruins Shootout.
This is an impressive recruiting coup for Princeton head coach Ron Fogarty and his assistant coaches, Brad Dexter and Stavros Paskaris. A couple of top Hockey East schools, including Providence and Boston University, were hot on Rubin's trail over the past six months.
Fowler to appear in USHL games
Governor's Academy forward and UMass Lowell commit Owen Fowler will be playing for the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers this weekend when the team takes on the Dubuque Fighting Saints and the Waterloo Black Hawks. An '02 from Tewksbury, Fowler plays for the Neponset Valley River Rats 18-U team during the fall. Fowler brings a lot of energy and intensity each shift. He has a nose for the net and skates well.
Former prep stars faring well in USHL
Harvard commit Alex Laferriere, who led Kent to a NEPSAC Large School Championship last March, is the leading scorer in the USHL entering the weekend.
The Chatham, N.J., native has six goals and seven assists in six games for Des Moines. A late '01, Laferriere is in his first year of eligibility for the NHL Draft.
In addition to Laferriere, two other former prep players are among the top 10 scorers in the USHL. Northeastern commit Gunnar Fontaine, who played at Moses Brown and Lawrence Academy, has six goals and three assists in six games for the Chicago Steel. That puts the East Greenwich, R.I., native in a tie for fourth in the league scoring race.
Steel teammate and Hopkinton, Mass., native Sean Farrell is eighth in the USHL in scoring with three goals and six assists in six games. The USA Hockey NTDP alum played a year of prep hockey for Carl Corazzini at St. Mark's. Farrell, a Harvard commit, is another late '01 who could be drafted in next June's NHL Draft.
