Last weekend, many of the top 2003-born players in the Bay State competed in the Massachusetts Hockey CCM High Performance Select 16 Festival at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro.
Approximately 80 players competed over the course of three days in hopes of earning a spot to this upcoming weekend’s Massachusetts Hockey CCM High Performance Final 40. From there, 12 players will be selected to participate in the 2019 USA Hockey Select 16 Player Development Camp this July in Amherst, N.Y.
A few of the top ‘03s from the state were not there due to USA Hockey giving those who attended the NTDP Evaluation Camp in Plymouth, Mich., back in March a pass to national camp.
Most of the selections were pretty obvious, but I thought a goaltender being left off the list of players moving on to Final 40 was questionable. Below is my full list of who I’d have sent on to next weekend’s Final 40, in order, and with notes on a few prospects who stood out:
Forwards
1. Matt Copponi
#10 Blue, Mansfield HS, 6/4/03, Right Shot
Copponi used his quickness to hunt pucks, beat defenders, and make some plays. A highlight reel play he made was a backhand finish after a nice stickhandling maneuver to get past a defender.
2. JP Turner
#17 Grey, Avon Old Farms, 1/31/03, Right Shot
NCAA Commit: New Hampshire
Turner has a great shot and plays a heavy game. He’s able to drive to the net and protect pucks below the dots. The Falmouth, Mass., native is a physical presence and his feet are coming. This was a really good viewing for him.
3. Culin Wilson
#17 Blue, Dexter, 3/12/03, Left Shot
In the time this observer was in the rink watching this particular age group, Wilson didn’t produce much offense. However, his hockey sense is one of the best in this age group. Down the road, he projects to be a top two or three forward among the ‘03s in this region.
4. CJ Monturio
#13 Grey, Thayer, 2/21/03, Right Shot
Simply put, Monturio is an athlete. He competes hard and he can skate. He’s a fun player to watch and would be expected to make it through to Buffalo once again.

Bennett plays hard and was noticeable several times over the course of the weekend.

Elias is a player you don’t always notice because he just goes about things in a simple, smart, and efficient manner. This weekend was much of the same.
2. Aiden Lyons
#5 Green, Nobles, 2/26/03, Left Shot
Lyons has a lot of skill with the puck on his stick and makes plays.
3. Declan Loughnane
#5 Red, BC High, 11/22/03, Right Shot
Loughnane continues to come along and will have a NCAA commitment when he gets to that point in the process. He gets shots through from the point and has a good stick.
4. Tyler Rubin
#7 Grey, Belmont Hill, 1/10/03, Left Shot
Rubin played on a bad Belmont Hill team and shined a few times. This was a great viewing for him. He has good feet, plays hard, and has a good stick.
5. Brendan Fitzgerald
#3 Grey, Islanders HC 16U, 3/6/03, Left Shot
Fitzgerald was injured on Saturday, but was his usual physical, solid self prior.
6. Patrick Morrissey
#6 Red, Dexter, 1/7/03, Right Shot
7. William Killoran

Killoran is a big, throwback defenseman, with a little bit of offensive touch. He’s tough and uses his size well.

Pane is one of the top ‘03 goaltenders in the country so it is absolutely mind boggling how he did not make it through to Final 40, unless there’s a conflict in his schedule.
