The Boston Bruins announced Wednesday the signing of University of Wisconsin sophomore center Trent Frederic, the organization's first round draft pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Frederic signed an entry-level contract, but will finish out the 2017-18 season on an ATO with the Providence Bruins.
Frederic, a St. Louis, Mo., native, spent the past two seasons playing college hockey for the Badgers after a stellar two-year stint with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program (NTDP). In 66 career games with Wisconsin, Frederic potted 32 goals and added 33 assists. While Frederic's offensive numbers were slightly above what was expected, he projects as a solid third line center who can play 200 feet, be responsible, and can be counted on in any situation.
The Bruins were criticized for taking him with the 29th overall pick in 2016, but he had a very good college career and was a key member of back-to-back U.S. National Junior Teams at the World Junior Championships.
