Boston Junior Eagles 16U and Mid Fairfield Rangers 16U played the final game of the EHF/Mass. Selects League Columbus Day Showcase at Boston College’s Conte Forum on Sunday afternoon.
The majority of the showcase’s games were played at Warrior Arena in Brighton, Mass., and at Conte Forum. This particular game had ample interest, given the numbers of ‘03s with USA Hockey NTDP potential.
The organizations boast two of the top minor midget teams in the New England region, but the Jr. Eagles came out on top, 3-1. Recent Yale commit Philip Tresca had two goals and an assist, while Nick Roukounakis had a goal and two assists. Northeastern recruit Jack Hughes had two assists. Boston College commit Paul Davey had the lone tally for Mid Fairfield.
A few miles down the road, Cape Cod Whalers 16U and Boston Junior Bruins 16U finished out the EHF/Mass. Selects League Columbus Day Showcase at Warrior Arena. The Whalers' lineup was significantly depleted due to a variety of issues.
Chris Delaney
Junior Bruins 16U, 9/25/04, Left Wing, Left Shot
Delaney is extremely small, but he’s quick and stickhandles well. He’s crafty and leads the Junior Bruins in scoring, despite being a late ’04 playing up with ‘02s and ‘03s. His father, also Chris Delaney, played at Boston College from 1981 to 1984.
Gavin Fitzpatrick
Junior Eagles 16U/Thayer, 1/9/02, Goaltender, Catches Left
After excelling at USA Hockey Select 16s and earning a spot on the Five Nations roster, Fitzpatrick continues to prove he’s an elite goaltender. He has good size, stays quiet and makes saves look easy. He challenges shooters and made it hard for Mid Fairfield shooters to find holes. The only goal he gave up was an absolute snipe by Davey.
Brendan Gorman
Junior Eagles 16U/St. Sebastian’s, 2/17/03, Center, Right Shot
Gorman skates hard and is heavy on pucks. He has some skill, too. One play that really stood out was when he raced back to make a nice backcheck on a Mid Fairfield player who had just gained the zone. He’s the younger brother of St. Sebastian’s senior center Liam Gorman, a Pittsburgh Penguins' draft pick and Boston University commit.
Cam Grillo
Mid Fairfield 16U/Trinity-Pawling, 2/6/02, Defense, Left Shot
The Old Saybrook, Conn., native continues to make strides in his game. He has good skill and footwork and decent size. He moves pucks smoothly. His hockey sense in his own zone and lack of dynamic offensive ability keeps him from earning a college commitment, but he has the upside to land in Division 1 down the road.
Jeffrey Lee
Cape Cod Whalers 16U/St. Mark’s, 5/15/02, Defense, Left Shot
The San Jose Jr. Sharks' product stood out at the Tier 1 Labor Day Face Off. He was once again noticeable Sunday night. He’s shifty, evades forecheckers and is a puck-possession defender. He moves pucks north in transition and controls the power play from the point. He’s on the smaller side, but should be a great prep player.
Matt McGroarty
Mid Fairfield 16U/Brunswick, 1/30/03, Right Wing, Right Shot
McGroarty skates hard and plays a solid, 200-foot game. He hunts pucks and had an assist on Davey’s goal late in the game.
Ian Moore
Cape Cod Whalers 16U/St. Mark’s, 11/2/02, Defense, Right Shot
The Wellesley, Mass., native is starting to earn some Division 1 offers with his progression over the past year. He’s had a great fall and his size, puck skills and stick are all noteworthy. Once he becomes more assertive, he’ll likely land at a top Ivy League program.
Jack Musa
Mid Fairfield 16U/Trinity-Pawling, 7/22/03, Left Wing, Left Shot
Musa had a good weekend. He buzzes all over the ice and is on the smaller side, but doesn’t back down from anyone. He’ll go to the net and into the corners on the forecheck to get pucks to linemates. From Florida, he’s the younger brother of Dartmouth commit Joey Musa.
Nick Roukounakis
Junior Eagles 16U/Thayer, 9/8/03, Left Wing, Left Shot
The Pembroke, Mass., native had a great game Sunday night. He made a really nice play to win a battle for a loose puck in back of the attacking goal line before dishing it to Tresca for a goal. He drives the net and is heavy on pucks. His stick skills are one area that could benefit from some improvement.
Colin Wenrich
Junior Bruins 16U, 1/16/03, Center, Left Shot
From Hopkinton, Mass., Wenrich spent the past two seasons playing bantam hockey in Michigan, per his Elite Prospects page. Wenrich has some good size, decent power in his stride and created a few opportunities.
