Three local colleges, Brown, Maine and Merrimack, added new recruits over the past week. Action on the recruiting trail continues to be feverish with Junior and Midget showcases in full swing across North America.
Brown received a commitment from Long Island Gulls 18-U defenseman Bryceon Lago. The '04 from Miami, Fla., is in his third season playing in the northeast after coming up through the Florida Alliance youth organization.
Lago spent the past two seasons with Vinny Smith’s 16-U team with the North Jersey Avalanche. Smith, Mark Lotito, Dan Cassano and Donny Kane left that program to take over the Long Island Gulls. Like many of his teammates, Lago followed and is on the 18-U team this year. He’s also played high school hockey in New Jersey at Bergen Catholic.
Lago is on the smaller side, but he’s a swift-footed, mobile, puck-moving defenseman. In 2020-21, he put up close to a point per game while playing top-four minutes for an Avalanche team that won the USA Hockey National Championship.
Lago’s commitment continues a trend of Brendan Whittet’s program honing in on prospects from the New York region. Eleven of the 13 players committed to Brown are either from New York or New Jersey or have played in the region.
Lago’s teammate with the Gulls, '04 Jake Manfre, also recently made a commitment. The former Mid Fairfield winger committed to play at Princeton.
Maritimes forward for the Black Bears
Maine has received a big-time commitment from Bradley Nadeau, an '05 from St-Francois-de-Madawaska, New Brunswick. Nadeau is a smaller, crafty center who played the 2020-21 season for the Fredericton Caps 18-U, scoring nine goals and 11 assists in 14 games. His older brother, Josh, is also committed to the Black Bears.
Warriors add AJHL forward
Drumheller Dragons forward Ty Daneault recently announced his commitment to Merrimack.
A late '04 from Red Deer, Alberta, Daneault is embarking on his first season of junior hockey. Through two games, he has a goal and two assists. Previously, Daneault played midget hockey for the Red Deer Rebels and Red Deer Chiefs.
