Two notable Hockey East recruits — forward Sasha Teleguine and defenseman Guillaume Richard — have made changes in their commitments over the past few days.
Teleguine decommitted from Northeastern in favor of UConn. The main reason for the switch is Mike Cavanaugh and his staff were willing to bring him in for the 2021-22 season, while NU was expecting him to play another year of junior hockey.
In 20 games this season with the Chilliwack Chiefs in the BCHL, Teleguine scored four goals and added 14 assists. Prior to heading west for junior hockey, Teleguine played prep with Thayer and Midget hockey for the Boston Junior Eagles. Teleguine, from North Attleboro, Mass., is the 134th-ranked North American skater in NHL Central Scouting’s final update ahead of the July draft.
Teleguine’s commit continues a trend of UConn adding recruits who were formerly committed to Beanpot schools. Others in that category include Artem Shlaine, Nate Hanley, Chase Bradley and Ryan Tverberg.
Richard, an ’03 from Quebec City, was released from National Letter of Intent at Maine following the coaching change and is now committed to Providence College. The prized former Black Bear commit had a close relationship with Ben Guite, who is no longer on the staff in Orono.
Richard had two goals and 14 assists in 46 games with the USHL’s Tri-City Storm this season. He spent the 2019-20 campaign with Mount Saint Charles 16-U.
Most projections have Richard going in the late second or early stages of the third round in July’s NHL draft.
In other news, former Brown commit Hunter McCoy is now slated to attend Army West Point. The Newburyport, Mass., native and former standout with Phillips Exeter and Islanders Hockey Club was one of the top uncommitted 2000-born players in the region.
McCoy scored 14 goals and 21 assists in 53 regular-season games this season for the Maryland Black Bears in the NAHL. McCoy spent the 2019-20 season in the BCHL with Powell River and Langley.
