The University of Massachusetts hockey program landed a commitment from Salisbury center Lucas Mercuri, it was announced Monday night.
Mercuri, an ’02 from LaSalle, Quebec, was a two-year star for Salisbury and the leading scorer on this year’s team that captured the NEPSAC Elite 8 championship. In 28 games, he had 19 goals and 19 assists for 38 points. That was on the heels of a 20-goal, 25-assist campaign in 2018-19.
Mercuri came to the prep school circuit after playing youth hockey for Lac St-Louis Arsenal and Chateauguay Grenadiers in his native Quebec. Mercuri is a power forward with good size and elite hockey sense. His skating is an area that could use improvement, but he’s a player that a few NHL teams are eying for the 2020 draft.
UMass beat out Wisconsin and a couple of other schools for Mercuri’s services. He had originally committed to Vermont during the fall of 2018. However, he decommitted from the Catamounts when Kevin Sneddon announced his retirement in February.
Mercuri, who played split-season hockey for Rochester Coalition, will spend the 2020-21 season with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the USHL before matriculating to UMass the following year. In three games with Des Moines this season, he had one assist.
NMH alum commits to LIU
Long Island University received a commitment from ’99 forward Jack Quinn, it was announced late last week. The Lancaster, Mass., native spent this season with the Junior Bruins in the USPHL NCDC and Kenai River Brown Bears in the NAHL.
He had 11 goals and six assists in 36 games with Kenai River. Prior to his time in junior hockey, he spent two seasons of prep hockey at Northfield Mount Hermon. He started to generate some buzz during his senior season while tallying 19 goals and 22 assists in 30 games.
Quinn, who played Midget hockey for Islanders Hockey Club and high school hockey for Saint Peter-Marian, will be on the Sharks roster for their inaugural season in 2020-21.
