Loomis Chaffee junior defenseman Jan Olenginski has committed to play college hockey at St. Lawrence, it was announced over the weekend.
The Lafayette Hill, Pa., native is in his first season with the Windsor, Conn., prep school after playing the previous two seasons for LaSalle Prep College High in his native Pennsylvania.
A right-shot, Olenginski is a smaller, offensive-minded defenseman who excels at moving pucks up ice. The '03 isn't the flashiest of players, but he has good feet and makes quick decisions to get pucks up to open teammates on breakouts. Olenginski isn't afraid to jump into the rush and he's able to drive pucks to the net. He has a goal and an assist so far this prep season with the Pelicans.
Olenginski spent the fall playing for the Yale Jr. Bulldogs 16-U, coached by Jon Bellonio. He stood out to NEHJ in viewings at the USA Hockey Select 16 Player Development Camp in July, the River Rats Jamboree, and the Mid Fairfield Showcase.
Dowd commits to Providence
Providence College received a verbal commitment from New Jersey Titans 16-U defenseman Anthony Dowd, the player tweeted Monday evening.
Dowd, an '03 from Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., is a familiar name to longtime hockey fans. His father, Jim Dowd, played in 827 NHL games, mostly with the New Jersey Devils and Minnesota Wild. Anthony's brother, Jimmy Dowd, plays for the USHL's Chicago Steel and is committed to Penn State.
Anthony is a smart, puck-moving defenseman who has gotten more explosive and dynamic over the past year. He's on the smaller side, but he does a good job quarterbacking a power play as well as moving pucks up ice in transition.
In 26 games for the Titans this season, he has seven goals and nine assists. Dowd's strong play has been noted by NEHJ at USA Hockey Select 16 Player Development Camp, the ECC Labor Day Cup, and the Beantown Fall Classic.
Rickard commits to AIC
Defenseman Matthew Rickard, a '99 from Coventry, R.I., has committed to play college hockey at American International. The Winchendon School alum is in his second season of playing junior hockey.
In 32 games with the NAHL's Lone Star Brahmas this season, Rickard has six goals and 16 assists. He had two goals and 21 assists in 70 BCHL games with the Powell River Kings in 2018-19.
