UMass Lowell commit Ben Meehan is off to a hot start with the USHL’s Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
The Walpole, Mass., native is in his first season of playing junior hockey after a successful prep school career at Dexter Southfield.
Meehan, an ’01, leads the junior league in goals by a defenseman with six and also has two assists in just eight games for the RoughRiders. In Saturday’s 6-5 loss to the Omaha Lancers, Meehan had a hat trick and added a helper.
Meehan has always been a tough defenseman with good hockey sense and a good stick, but the offensive production wasn’t always there at Dexter. He should garner some NHL draft attention in his second year of eligibility.
He’s not the only defenseman with local ties to be jumping into the offense early in the USHL season. Dominic Vidoli, who played six games for Boston University last season, is tied with Meehan for third in defensemen scoring with two assists and six assists.
Former BC High and Thayer star Jayson Dobay, a UMass commit, has a goal and five helpers in nine games with the Youngstown Phantoms to put him in a tie for sixth among USHL defensemen.
Santa Juana commits to UConn
The University of Connecticut recently picked up a commit from ’02 left-shot forward Brandon Santa Juana. The Langley, British Columbia, native is in his second season with the Surrey Eagles in the BCHL.
Santa Juana has three goals and eight assists in 16 games. He had 12 goals and 10 assists in 53 games a year ago. Prior to heading to the BCHL, Santa Juana played for Delta Hockey Academy.
Dartmouth lands commit from Morehouse
Pittsburgh Penguins Elite 16-U right wing Jackson Morehouse committed to Dartmouth, it was announced Monday night.
The Pittsburgh, Pa., native is a top six forward for the Penguins Elite, one of the top midget teams in the U.S. He’s continued to trend in the right direction over the past couple of seasons.
