Maine was busy on the recruiting trail over the weekend as the Black Bears added three new commits.
First-year head coach Ben Barr and his staff have been on the hunt for more talent in hopes of turning around the Maine program. The once proud Black Bears have not made an NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012.
Muskegon Lumberjacks right wing Nick Peluso, Penticton Vees defenseman Grayson Arnott, and Sioux Falls Power 16-U left wing Brady Arneson all pledged to play college hockey at Maine.
Peluso, an ’04 from Rochester, N.Y., is the most well-known addition to local recruiters and scouts. He played Bantam hockey with the Buffalo Junior Sabres before playing 15 Only with Rochester Selects.
In 2020-21, Peluso made the jump to Bishop Kearney Selects. In 46 games with the organization’s 16-U team, he had 15 goals and 19 assists. He started the 2021-22 season with BK Selects 18-U, scoring six goals and 15 assists in 14 games. Due to his hot start, he was called up to the Muskegon Lumberjacks. He’s scoreless through his first three games in the USHL.
Arnott is in his final season of playing junior hockey with the BCHL’s premier program. The righty from Toronto, Ontario, will come to Orono with three years of junior experience.
The ’01 has three assists in his first four games of the season. Prior to 2020-21 with Penticton, he played one year in the OJHL with the Oakville Blades. Arnott played Canadian prep school hockey at St. Andrew’s College. He is the son of well-known NHLPA agent Wade Arnott of Newport, who represents Brad Marchand, Phil Kessel and Zach Parise, among others.
Arneson is an ’05 from Red Wing, Minn. He's in his fourth year playing for the Sioux Falls Power. He has one goal in four games this season.
