Lawrence Academy product Kyle Furey committed to Northeastern, he announced on Thursday.
The ’02 from Marblehead, Mass., is in his first season with the Youngstown Phantoms in the United States Hockey League. He was selected by the organization in the eighth round of the USHL Phase 2 draft last May.
Furey spent the previous two seasons playing for Rob Barker at Lawrence Academy. In 2019-20, he scored three goals and 19 assists for 22 points in 27 games for the Spartans. He dished out 10 assists in his first year of prep hockey in 2018-19. In addition to his time at LA, he played split-season hockey for the Cape Cod Whalers. Prior to his time at Lawrence, he played his freshman year at Malden Catholic.
Furey is a mobile, puck-moving defenseman whose best asset is his skating. He becomes the 11th player from his time at Lawrence to commit to a Division 1 college hockey program, including Northeastern’s Sam Colangelo and Merrimack’s Conor Lovett, both of whom are already skating for their respective college programs.
In November, Furey was my fourth-rated uncommitted ’02 in New England. Since then, three of the top four players have made college commitments. No. 1 Nate Benoit (Mount Saint Charles 18-U) chose North Dakota and No. 3 Nick Marciano (Kent) landed at Princeton.
Holy Cross lands NAHL forward
Holy Cross recently received a commitment from Johnstown Tomahawks winger John Gelatt, an ’01 from Middletown, N.J. Gelatt played prep school hockey at Trinity-Pawling while skating for North Jersey Avalanche and New Jersey Colonials in Midget hockey.
Gelatt is off to a hot start with the Tomahawks in his first season of junior hockey. In 16 games, he has 14 goals and 10 assists. He potted 18 goals and added 24 assists for 42 points in 25 games at Trinity-Pawling last season.
Gelatt is a competitor who hunts pucks, forechecks with tenacity, and can force turnovers. He’s a solid commit for Holy Cross coach David Berard and his staff.
Norweigan center targets Dartmouth
Trym Lokkeberg has committed to Dartmouth, it was revealed earlier this week. From Fredrikstad, Norway, Lokkeberg is an ’01 in his second season playing junior hockey in Sweden.
Skating for the Mora IK J20, Lokkeberg has five goals and six assists in 13 games so far this season. He’s already more than doubled his production from the 2018-19 campaign. Last winter, he scored three assists in five games while playing for Norway at the World Junior Championship’s second tier.
