Cornell University recently landed commitments from Kimball Union senior left wing Sullivan Mack and former Williston defenseman Tim Rego.
Mack's commitment to the Big Red ends one of the most hotly contested recruiting battles of the prep season. The Anchorage, Alaska, native was being procured by several top programs, including Denver and Michigan. There was known Ivy interest with Cornell and Harvard.
Ultimately, Mack opted for the Mike Schafer's program. In 22 games this season for KUA, Mack has 24 goals and 20 assists while playing on a line with Edmonton Oilers draft pick and Providence commit Tomas Mazura.
While Mack is on the older side for a prep player, there's plenty to like about his game. He's got average to decent size, skates well, can shoot it hard, and he plays hard. He can fill a bunch of roles throughout the lineup.
Mack will be joining his former teammate, Kyle Penney, with the Big Red. Penney, a captain for KUA last season, has 30 points in 46 BCHL games with the Chilliwack Chiefs this season. Similarly to Mack, Penney is a versatile player who hopped back on defense for Tim Whitehead's team when the blue line was depleted with injury.
Rego tweeted his commitment announcement on Wednesday. The late '00 from Mansfield, Mass., is in his first season with the AJHL's Brooks Bandits after playing three seasons of prep hockey for Derek Cunha at Williston Northampton.
Rego originally committed to Holy Cross while having a respectable senior season with the Wildcats. He has had a stellar year up in Alberta, prompting interest from Cornell. In 46 games so far this season, Rego has 19 goals and 33 assists.
Rego is a puck-moving, offensive-minded defenseman. He has a good shot and sees the ice well with the puck on his stick. Playing without the puck and in the defensive zone were areas that needed improvement while he was at Williston. Nonetheless, he's putting up monster numbers in the AJHL.
Rego and Mack are expected to matriculate to Ithaca for the start of the 2020-21 season, but as '00s, both have a year of junior eligibility remaining, following this season.
