Three forwards from the Cape Cod Whalers 18-U team announced their commitments to Ivy League schools over the weekend.
Twin brothers Donovan and Julian Frias are heading to Yale while Andrew Garzone announced his intention to play at Princeton. All three had impressive showings at last week’s River Rats Jamboree, as well as other recent showcases.
The Frias brothers attend and play at St. George’s. Donovan is a left-shot forward who can play left wing or center. Julian is a righty who plays right wing. Both stand tall at 6-foot-4. From Hudson, Mass., they’ve previously played for the River Rats, Boston Imperials and Junior Bruins.
Donovan is the more highly regarded of the brothers. He’s a power forward who can protect pucks, drive the cage and has the ability to make plays below the dots. He brings a physical element and his skating has come a long way over the past couple of years.
Julian is a good player in his own right. He plays a similar, north-south power forward game. He can finish, as he’s shown numerous times already this past month, whether it be at the Bulldog Hockey Experience or River Rats Jamboree.
Born later in '04, the Frias twins are not eligible for the NHL Entry Draft until 2023, but have intriguing pro hockey tools and potential.
Garzone, who plays at Deerfield, has continued getting better over the past 18 months. He’s always been a reliable two-way forward who competes hard. He’s developed more of a scoring touch and his skating now has an explosive element. He’s a north-south power forward who will compete hard, win battles below the net, and be a dependable player in all situations.
Garzone (5) and Frias (6) were featured in my recent top uncommitted `04 list, as was recent Providence commit Chris Romaine (3). Going back to last December, I mentioned Garzone as one of the top uncommitted `04s in Massachusetts. Eight of the top 12 on that list are now committed to a college hockey program.
