The college hockey coaching carousel continues to turn this off-season. Providence College head coach Nate Leaman is set to hire Joel Beal as the new assistant coach for the Friars, sources told the New England Hockey Journal.
Beal, who played two seasons under Leaman at Union, had recently been hired as the assistant coach at Bentley following a season as the assistant coach at Miami. Prior to his year with Miami, he was an assistant at Sacred Heart and a graduate assistant at Union.
Beal replaces Kris Mayotte, who left Providence to join Mel Pearson’s coaching staff at the University of Michigan. Mayotte’s departure left a void in terms of having a goaltender on the Providence staff. According to sources, Leaman is going to bring on former Cornell goaltender and Harvard volunteer assistant Bruce Irving.
With Beal going to Providence, Bentley head coach Ryan Soderquist is again forced to look for an assistant coach. Harvard head coach Ted Donato is also still searching for an assistant coach, but the Crimson are close to making a hire, according to several sources.
Harvard looks to Marcou
Brown University assistant coach and UMass alum James Marcou is set to become the new assistant coach for Ted Donato at Harvard University, multiple sources have told New England Hockey Journal.
Prior to joining Brendan Whittet's staff at Brown, Marcou was a graduate assistant at UMass. A high-scoring winger for the Minutemen during his playing days, he helped Brown land some very good recruits over the past year. Marcou fills the opening on the Crimson staff that occurred when Rob Rassey left to become an amateur scout with the Detroit Red Wings.
Schneider tabbed as AIC assistant
Cory Schneider will be the new assistant coach at American International, NEHJ first reported last Thursday. The 2012 Ohio State alum was an assistant coach at UMass Boston the past two seasons. Prior to that, Schneider spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
Schneider, who hails from Rochester, N.Y., replaces Mike Towns on the Eric Lang's staff. Towns departed the Yellow Jackets to become an assistant coach at Clarkson University, it was announced earlier this summer.
UMass Lowell adds Fuchs to staff
Chase Fuchs, formerly an assistant coach for the USHL's Central Illinois Flying Aces, will be the new Director of Hockey Operations at UMass Lowell. Fuchs, who played college hockey at Clarkson, was left without a job when the Flying Aces announced they'd sit out the 2019-20 season. He replaces Ryan Blair on Norm Bazin's staff.
Eagles land prep school champ
In other news, Boston College landed a commitment from one of the top players from the 2018-19 season in prep school hockey. Former Kent School center Michael Posma announced his verbal commitment to the Eagles, via Twitter on Tuesday.
The entire BC coaching staff, including head coach Jerry York and assistant coaches Mike Ayers and Brendan Buckley, were in attendance last Monday afternoon to watch Posma play at the Beantown Summer Classic.
Posma, formerly committed to Air Force, is a hard-working forward who can make plays. He excels below the dots and is able to drive the net. He’s set to join the USHL’s Cedar Rapids RoughRiders for the 2019-20 season.
