On Monday, Providence College received a commitment from a 2001-born defenseman who will greatly improve the team’s future ability to retrieve and break pucks out of its own zone.
Cam McDonald, a Muskegon Lumberjacks left-shot defenseman from Eagle River, Alaska, committed to the Friars. He had two goals and 37 assists in 59 games with the Kenai River Brown Bears in the North American Hockey League (NAHL) last season.
McDonald was rated as the third best defenseman at the USA Hockey Select 17 Player Development Camp and was a surprise snub by USA Hockey for the Hlinka-Gretzky Cup roster.
To secure the services of McDonald, the Friars beat out several big-time programs from across the country.
Quinnipiac lands Jersey Hitmen forward
Over the weekend, Quinnipiac received a verbal commitment from Don Bosco Prep and Jersey Hitmen 18U forward Liam McLinskey. The ’01 was a standout at the 2018 Liberty Bell Games.
From Pearl River, N.J., he is a power forward who does a good job driving the net and freeing up space for his linemates. He recovers pucks below the dots and distributes it to open teammates.
BC loses high-end forward
Boston College was on the wrong end of a recruiting announcement on Monday. U.S. NTDP U18 defenseman Cam York of Anaheim Hills, Calif., has de-committed and will reopen his recruitment.
A projected first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, York could opt to play major junior in the Western Hockey League or commit to another NCAA program. According to one NHL scout with knowledge of the situation, Michigan could be the early leader to land York. Other potential suitors are Denver, North Dakota and Minnesota.
York and five New England natives will play in the 2018 USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game tomorrow night at the XCel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.
