The top five incoming goaltenders to prep school hockey could have a significant impact on how well their respective teams do this season.
This group of prep school recruits is highlighted by two goaltenders who are already committed to play Division I college hockey. Harvard recruit Derek Mullahy and Providence recruit Alex Aslanidis will see plenty of ice time for two of prep hockey’s perennial powerhouses.
Here are the top five prep hockey newcomers at the goaltending position:
1. Derek Mullahy
Dexter, 3/20/01, Junior, Catches Left, 6-0/177
College Commit: Harvard
A native of Scituate, Mass., Mullahy is transferring back to Dexter after spending two seasons in Minnesota at Shattuck-St. Mary’s. The Crimson commit isn’t overly big, but has decent size and combines that with sound fundamentals and above average athleticism in the crease. A third round pick by the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the 2017 USHL Phase I Draft, he was a key component in winning the Massachusetts District 16U Championship this fall with the Boston Jr. Eagles. With the graduation of Aidan Murphy, look for Mullahy to log a majority of the minutes between the pipes for Dan Donato’s club.
2. Alex Aslanidis
Avon Old Farms, 1/20/01, Junior, Catches Left, 6-4/215
College Commit: Providence
The Moorestown, N.J. native has one of the toughest jobs in prep school hockey this winter. He has to replace BC recruit Spencer Knight, who left the Winged Beavers to play for the U.S. NTDP. Aslanidis, who previously played for St. Joseph’s Prep and the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers, is a big goaltender who takes up a lot of the net. He was a NTDP Evaluation Camp attendee, but fell short of making the program. The Lincoln Stars selected Aslanidis in the 24th round of the 2017 USHL Phase II Draft while the Oshawa Generals own his OHL rights.
3. Kyle Myer
Tabor, 1/30/01, Junior, Catches Left, 6-2/185
The Floridian will most likely split time with Brandon Sherman for Gerry Dineen’s Seawolves. Myer has above average size and good athleticism. He impressed at the ECC Futures Cup this past summer.
4. JP Mella
Gunnery, 11/29/00, Junior, Catches Left, 5-11/225
The Stamford, Conn., native is another transfer from Shattuck-St. Mary’s. Mella spent three seasons at the Minnesota prep school, but will be back in New England this winter. He participated in this year’s USA Hockey Select 17 Player Development Camp.
5. Jared Levine
Salisbury, 7/2/00, Junior, Catches Left, 5-9/160
The Los Angeles Jr. Kings product is a small goaltender who relies on his quick reflexes to make acrobatic saves. He lacks the size and quietness most college coaches are looking for, but he was very good this fall for the Connecticut River Hawks in split season midget hockey.
Honorable Mention: Kohl Reddy (Loomis Chaffee), Carmine Andranovich (Gunnery), Erik Voloshin (Milton)
