Boston College received a commitment from one of the top 2004-born forwards in the country in Cutter Gauthier, it was announced this week.
Gauthier will be playing for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program for the next two seasons before matriculating to BC in 2022. The Scottsdale, Ariz., native already has spent much of his youth hockey career in Michigan. He spent last season playing for Compuware 16-U and came up through the Honeybaked program prior to that.
Gauthier is a power forward who projects as a goal scorer at the collegiate level. He’s big and is able to use his size and strength to his advantage when driving the net and cycling pucks below the dots. His shot is a strength and his hockey sense is an area that could use improvement over the coming years.
According to sources, North Dakota and Minnesota Duluth were among the finalists along with Boston College. Gauthier joins Brunswick forward Conor Welsh and NTDP defensemen Seamus Powell and Charlie Leddy in BC’s talented ’04 class.
Harvard recruit heading to BCHL
Harvard recruit Jack Bar will begin the 2020-21 season with the Penticton Vees in the BCHL. The Newmarket, Ont., native originally was scheduled to play this season with the Crimson.
A late ’02 defenseman, Bar is a highly regarded prospect for the 2021 NHL draft. He committed to Harvard out of St. Andrew’s College, a prep school in Aurora, Ont.
Bar is a big, smooth, two-way defenseman with a ton of upside. He impressed at various tournaments in the New England area last season, including Belmont Hill Jamboree, St. Sebastian’s Christmas Tournament and True Hockey Prep Cup.
Appert leaving NTDP for Rochester Amerks
NTDP U-17 head coach Seth Appert is leaving the Plymouth, Mich.-based program to take on the responsibility of being head coach of the Rochester Amerks, the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres.
Appert, who previously was a head coach at RPI and assistant coach at Denver, never has worked in pro hockey before this job. While it doesn’t directly affect the New England hockey scene, many of the region’s top prospects have played or were scheduled to play for Appert with the NTDP.
