Boston College has received a verbal commitment from Paul Davey, one of the top 2003-born forward prospects in the United States.
BC assistant coach Mike Ayers watched Davey at two recent recruiting showcases, USA Hockey's Select 15 Player Development Camp and the BU Prep Showcase. Davey said he chose the Eagles because of the program’s tradition of excellence and the school's academic reputation.
“I’ve watched Boston College play for years," Davey said. "They play fast and recruit great players, and I feel very lucky to be included."
“My Mid-Fairfield coach, Ryan Haggerty, played for BC and I loved all of his stories about the hockey program," Davey added. "BC is very strong academically and that was a big part of my decision as well."
The Greenwich, Conn., native played the past few seasons for Mid-Fairfield’s ’03 team, coached by former NHL star Martin St. Louis. He also played this past winter for Brunswick, the NEPSAC Large School champion. He'll again don the Bruins' jersey as a rising sophomore in 2018-19.
Davey is a tall, lanky forward who excels below the dots. His size and physical tools made him a hot commodity on the recruiting trail. He does a good job recovering pucks and finding open teammates for scoring chances. He also has a hard shot from the slot that he can get off, as he's adept at protecting pucks.
Davey becomes the third ’03 to commit to Boston College, joining Shattuck St. Mary’s forward Peter Reynolds and Los Angeles Jr. Kings defenseman Aidan Hreschuk. The trio are all elite prospects, meaning the Eagles, thanks to the recruiting efforts of Ayers, are off to a very good start for the birth year.
Davey is the third ’03 from New England to commit to a college program. The others are St. Sebastian’s forward Jack Hughes and Mid-Fairfield and Brunswick teammate Ryan St. Louis, both slated to play for Northeastern.
We've previously written on Davey in our recap of the BU Prep Showcase, plus a preview for Select 15s camp.
MacDonald pledges to Merrimack
Over the weekend, Boston Advantage U16 forward Matthew MacDonald verbally committed to Merrimack College. He became the second local to commit to the Warriors in as many days, joining Belmont Hill defenseman Mike Brown.
MacDonald, an '02 from Kingston, Mass., is known for being a hard-nosed forward. His compete level is off the charts. He does a terrific job hunting pucks and has a good shot. If his skating can improve over the course of the next few years, he could be a solid college player for Scott Borek's Warriors.
