UMass Lowell associate head coach Cam Ellsworth will be the new head coach at Norwich University, according to multiple sources.
The official announcement will come at a press conference Wednesday.
Mike McMahon of College Hockey News first reported over the weekend that Ellsworth was a frontrunner for the position.
Ellsworth, 38, has been on staff at Lowell since Norm Bazin took over as head coach of the River Hawks prior to the 2011-12 season.
A native of Leamington, Ontario, Ellsworth had spent the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with the Sioux City Musketeers in the USHL. Ellsworth played collegiately at Michigan Tech from 2001-2005 before embarking on a brief minor pro career in the ECHL.
A goaltender in his playing days, Ellsworth can be credited with helping develop Winnipeg Jets star Connor Hellebuyck. UMass Lowell won three Hockey East Championships and made the NCAA Tournament in five of the seven seasons Ellsworth was there as an assistant.
According to sources, Ellsworth beat out Norwich alum and Stevenson University head coach Dominick Dawes for the top job with the Cadets.
Ellsworth replaces the legendary Mike McShane, a Wakefield, Mass., native who starred at the University of New Hampshire before joining the coaching ranks. McShane coached prep school for several years before also guiding St. Lawrence and Providence.
From there, he moved onto Norwich where he won four NCAA Championships and was named Division 3 Coach of the Year five times. McShane, whose last national championship came in 2017, announced his retirement in June.
UMass Lowell now has a vacant assistant position it will have to fill late in the game. Bazin already has Andy Jones on staff as an assistant and Troy Thibodeau as their director of hockey operations.
