Former Northeastern University and Malden Catholic forward Matt Filipe has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the hometown Boston Bruins.
The Lynnfield, Mass., native just completed his four-year collegiate career at Northeastern. Originally picked in the third round of the 2016 NHL draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, Filipe was able to sign with the Bruins as a free agent due to a loophole in the collective bargaining agreement.
Filipe scored 36 goals and 41 assists for 75 points in 136 career games with the Huskies. He was part of a team that won three consecutive Beanpot titles and Hockey East championships in his freshman and senior seasons. He followed his father, Paul Filipe, as being a Northeastern hockey player.
In between Malden Catholic and Northeastern, Filipe played the 2015-16 season with the USHL’s Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Filipe’s size, skating and physical play are his strengths, while his hockey sense and skill are areas of his game that could be considered a weakness.
Filipe isn’t the only Northeastern senior to use the loophole in the CBA allowing a drafted collegiate player to become a free agent. Defenseman and captain Ryan Shea of Milton, Mass., is expected to sign with another NHL team in the coming days after originally being drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Dorrington commits to St. Lawrence
Right wing Max Dorrington, a recent Cushing alum, has committed to playing college hockey at St. Lawrence. The North Reading, Mass., native played the past two seasons for the Penguins after spending time with the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs.
Dorrington, a 2001 birth-year player, had a breakout season in 2019-20, compiling 23 goals and 23 assists in 34 games. Dorrington is a big, strong winger who plays a north-south game. He’s expected to play the 2020-21 season with the AJHL’s Bonnyville Pontiacs.
His younger brother, ’04 defenseman Jackson Dorrington, is considered one of the top uncommitted players in New England. The Saints certainly would be lucky to land him, as well, but I’d surmise that the younger Dorrington will commit to a bigger-name program in New England.
Quinnipiac lands Ontario-born defenseman
Wellington Dukes defenseman Aaron Brown has committed to Quinnipiac, his junior team announced over the weekend.
The ’04 from Belleville, Ont., spent the past three seasons with the Quinte Red Devils, one of the more prestigious youth programs in the Canadian province. In 2019-20, he had eight goals and 16 assists in 36 games.
Brown is the first ’04 to commit to the Bobcats. He’s the second rising junior to commit to Rand Pecknold’s program since it was permitted on Aug. 1, joining North Jersey Avalanche defenseman Nicky Wallace.
