With a 5-4 overtime win over the Johnstown Tomahawks, the Northeast Generals won their first game of the 2020-21 North American Hockey League season on Thursday afternoon.
In the organization’s fifth season, the Generals are looking to finally get over the hump and make some noise past the division semifinals. At 1-3, the jury is still out on whether that can happen. However, Thursday’s outcome can be seen as a positive, as Johnstown has yet to lose a game in regulation this season.
A few NHL scouts and Division 3 college coaches were in the building for the game, but Division 1 coaches were stuck watching on HockeyTV. Here’s my look at notable prospects from both teams who could find their way onto a Division 1 college hockey roster in 2021-22.
Brendan Clark
Johnstown Tomahawks, 1/16/02, LW, left shot, 5-11/170
NCAA commit: Brown
Clark was the best player in the game, scoring a goal and adding two assists. The Morris Plains, N.J., native keeps his feet moving, hunts pucks and has the puck on his stick a lot. A product of the North Jersey Avalanche and Delbarton School, he’s reportedly heading to play for Brendan Whittet’s program next season.
Anthony Mastromonica
Johnstown Tomahawks, 5/23/00, C, left shot, 6-3/225
Mastromonica was the center on Clark’s line, the first for the Tomahawks. He scored two goals, including one on the doorstep just seven seconds into the game. He’s big, shoots it hard and is able to protect pucks with his length and strength. The Kings Park, N.Y., native drove the net and was a physical presence. I question his skating, especially his first two steps, when it comes to playing in ECAC Hockey or Hockey East. I could see him being a walk-on in Atlantic Hockey.
Bobby Metz
Northeast Generals, 8/20/01, D, right shot, 5-9/174
NCAA commit: Colgate
Metz scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime. He’s on the smaller side, but he joined the rush, skated with his head up, and made plays. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native was on the top power-play unit for Northeast. The Salisbury School alum projects as a five-six defenseman and second-unit power-play guy at Colgate.
Andy Stoneman
Northeast Generals, 4/16/00, C, left shot, 6-0/196
NCAA commit: St. Lawrence
Stoneman, from Faribault, Minn., played his freshman season at Bowdoin in the NESCAC. With that league canceling sports for this winter, he opted for the NAHL and is now committed to finish out his college career at St. Lawrence. It wasn’t his best game, but he skates and sees the ice well enough to possibly earn ice time in ECAC Hockey. Stoneman played at Shattuck-St. Mary’s as well as three different junior teams in the USHL and NAHL before going to Bowdoin.
Jonathan Young
Northeast Generals, 6/23/00, LW, left shot, 6-2/198
Young is a former Merrimack commit who has bounced around the junior hockey circuit over the past couple of years. He brings some USHL experience, size, and potential as a power forward. The Pelham, N.H., native scored a goal and had four shots on goal. I’d expect his eventual landing spot to be in Atlantic Hockey.
Alexander Tertyshny
Northeast Generals, 1/3/00, D, right shot, 6-1/191
NCAA commit: American International
Tertyshny is one of the oldest players in junior hockey this season, being born just a few days into 2000. He plays a mature game and is poised with the puck on his stick when he’s retrieving and looking to move pucks up ice. He didn’t generate a lot offensively, but I could see him being a fifth or sixth defenseman with breakout capabilities for AIC.
Dylan Schuett
Northeast Generals, 9/24/00, C, left shot, 6-1/218
Schuett centered one of the most impactful lines for Northeast. Entering his fourth season of playing junior hockey, he has that maturity to his game. From Medicine Hat, Alberta, Schuett had a pair of assists in this game. His skating, skill and vision are all above average. I could see him getting an opportunity in Atlantic Hockey. Otherwise, he could be a very nice addition for a Division 3 program.
