Nineteen players from New England were selected in Monday’s United States Hockey League Phase I Draft.
Players born in 2004 were eligible to be selected in Phase I, while tomorrow’s Phase II will be open to players born between 2000 and 2004 who are not protected by a USHL organization.
South Kent Selects Academy led the way with four players selected in the 10-round draft. Brunswick School had three players drafted, while Cushing Academy, Mount Saint Charles and Thayer Academy each were represented by two prospects.
There were 21 players selected who played the 2019-20 hockey season inside of the New England region. Of those, 12 played prep school hockey, eight played full-season Midget hockey, and one played Massachusetts high school hockey.
Three of the 19 local players were chosen in the first round of Monday’s proceedings. Thayer Academy right wing Mikey Stenberg (Needham, Mass.) was the first New England native to go off the board. The Penn State commit was selected by the Des Moines Buccaneers in the first round with the fourth overall pick.
Boston Advantage 15’s defenseman Ryan Healey was the next local player selected. The Hull, Mass., native was tabbed by the Sioux Falls Stampede with the seventh overall pick. Next up was Brunswick School center Andon Cerbone. The Stamford, Conn., native went 11th overall to the Chicago Steel.
Selects Academy 15’s goaltender Arthur Smith was the first player chosen at his position. The Farmington, Conn., native was pegged by the Madison Capitols with the first pick in the second round.
Cushing Academy teammates, defenseman Jackson Dorrington (North Reading, Mass.) and right wing Cameron Lund (Bridgewater, Mass.) were next off the board a little later in the second round. Brunswick School center Connor Welsh was the final New Englander drafted in the second round.
