Defending Super 8 runner-up Central Catholic continues to distance itself from the pack in this week’s installment of the New England Hockey Journal MIAA Top 10.
1. Central Catholic (8-0-0)
Junior goaltender Matt Pasquale has done his best to impersonate a brick wall in net. He’s allowed just two goals in seven starts. The Raiders already have impressive wins over BC High, Hingham, Pope Francis and Austin Prep on their resume.
2. BC High (3-3-1)
The Eagles are back on the right track following back-to-back eight goal outbursts in victories over Weymouth and Xaverian. A date with Arlington Monday night at Ed Burns Arena is next on the docket.
3. Pope Francis (5-1-2)
After starting out 5-0 the Cardinals are 0-1-2 over their last three games. Brian Foley’s team goes out of state for their next two opponents: Bishop Hendricken and Notre Dame of West Haven.
4. St. John’s Prep (4-1-1)
Goals haven’t been easy to come by for Kristian Hanson’s team this season, but the Eagles scored four unanswered in a comeback win against Catholic Conference rival Malden Catholic over the weekend.
5. Burlington (8-0-0)
The Red Devils look to be the best public school team in the state. So far this season Bob Conceison’s squad has outscored its opponents 27-5.
6. St. Mary’s (5-1-3)
After a 0-2-1 start the Spartans have reeled off five wins and a tie while capturing the Christie Serino Christmas Classic title. The defending Division 1 state champs are always a tough draw.
7. St. John’s Shrewsbury (5-1-1)
Sophomore Dhillon Wilde has been the offensive catalyst for the Pioneers who are positioning themselves for a run at a Super 8 bid after a few subpar seasons.
8. Arlington (3-2-0)
The Spy Ponders have won three straight after an unexpected 0-2 start. The defending state champs scored a big road win at Reading with a third period power play tally last Wednesday.
9. Xaverian (5-1-2)
The Hawks took one on the chin against BC High last time out and will be tested further as they continue league play. Sophomore Matty Ryan and freshman Robbie Barletta have led the way offensively with seven and six goals, respectively.
10. Waltham (6-0-2)
John Maguire’s Hawks are off to an undefeated start, but they’ll be tested Wednesday night against top ranked Central Catholic. That game will go a long way in showing whether or not the Hawks have what it takes to contend for a Super 8 bid.
