Harvard junior center Ryan Donato has been named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Year, the league announced Thursday.
The Scituate, Mass., native leads college hockey in goals per game with 26 in 28 games played. A 2014 second round draft pick of the Boston Bruins, Donato was named a finalist for the 2018 Hobey Baker Memorial Award on Wednesday. Donato is tops the nation in shots on goal per game with just over six. His three hat tricks is also the most of any player in Division I.
Donato had five goals in last month's Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. His selection by the Bruins was criticized at the time, but it's turning out to be a pretty good decision. While Donato isn't the type of player who can impact the game each shift, his uncanny shot can change a game in the blink of an eye.
The Crimson, in need of winning the ECAC Hockey Tournament in Lake Placid this weekend to make the NCAA Tournament, will face Clarkson in the semifinals. Once Harvard's season is over, all eyes will turn to whether or not the Bruins can persuade him to forgo his final season of collegiate eligibility.
