Being in the rinks over Labor Day weekend paid off for Cole Crusberg-Roseen.
His stellar play at the Tier 1 Labor Day Face Off led to a scholarship offer from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. From there, the New Hampshire Junior Monarchs 16U right-shot defenseman announced his verbal commitment to play college hockey for the Minutemen.
The Exeter, N.H., native previously played for Exeter High School and the Seacoast Spartans 16U. He finished the 2017-18 season with 14 goals and 27 assists for 41 points in 54 games for Seacoast.
Crusberg-Roseen was a lesser known recruiting commodity in the United States, despite being selected by Blaineville-Boisbriand Armada in the first round of the 2018 QMJHL Draft. Even some of the most ardent scouts and prep coaches had never heard of him prior to his commitment to UMass on Tuesday night.
However, Crusberg-Roseen is an athletic, offensive-minded defenseman. He's a smooth skater and he has a good stick.
The New Hampshire Junior Monarchs, coached by Mike Adessa and Frank Golden, were bounced out of the Tier 1 Labor Day Face Off in the playoffs by the powerful Cape Cod Whalers. UMass associate head coach Ben Barr watched him over the weekend in Foxboro. The tournament was well attended by college coaches, agents and NHL and junior scouts.
Crusberg-Roseen is the second 2002-born player to commit to UMass in less than a week, joining Spencer Smith, a St. Catherine’s, Ontario, native who plays for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres in the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL). Smith is a third-round pick of the Guelph Storm in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.
