The Catholic Central League boasted a few of the top prospects in the MIAA during the 2019-20 season.
St. Mary’s of Lynn and Austin Prep have dominated the league for much of the last decade. The Cougars took home top billing in league play with the Spartans coming in third. Upstart Bishop Fenwick, buoyed by veteran coach Jim Quinlan, finished second. Archbishop Williams and Arlington Catholic finished fifth and sixth, while Lowell Catholic rounded out the league standings in seventh.
While most of the top prospects in this league are destined for playing Division 3 NCAA hockey or ACHA club hockey down the road, a few prospects could find a home in Division 1 college hockey. Below is a look at the top 17 prospects from the Catholic Central.
1. Brady Bullock
St. Mary’s, 2/25/05, LW, left shot, 5-6/145
Bullock, who played split season for the Boston Junior Rangers, is a goal scorer who goes hard to the net and plays with an edge. He led the Spartans in goals with 13 and added eight assists. For a player his age to put up nearly a point per game in high school against many kids two to four years older is impressive.
2. Jack Farrell
Austin Prep, 6/10/04, D, left shot, 5-9/150
Farrell had a goal and two assists, but his bread and butter comes on the defensive side of the puck. He plays hard and has a good stick defensively. He does a good job of getting into shooting and passing lanes.
3. Cullen Emery
Austin Prep, 8/1/05, C/RW, right shot, 5-8/170
Emery had just two goals and three assists while playing for the Cougars as an eighth-grader, but the future is bright. He’s a prospect who is capable of blossoming into a complete, 200-foot center. He’s strong and plays a hard, honest game.
4. Davis Kinne
St. Mary’s, 6/25/03, D, right shot, 5-9/185
As surprising as it might sound, Kinne is a high school hockey veteran, despite his class status showing sophomore. In his third season playing for the Spartans, Kinne’s four goals and 15 assists jumpstarted the offense from the blue line. While his skating could get better, he’s poised and he sees the ice well, especially for this level.
4. Ty Wood
Austin Prep, 11/3/05, C, left shot, 5-11/175
Wood had seven goals and six assists playing up on the varsity as an eighth-grader. He’s physically mature, rugged and tough to knock off pucks. He wasn’t afraid to play within the dots and he did a good job protecting pucks when going up against defenders who were a few years older.
6. Brady Carpenter
St. Mary’s, 11/11/02, LW, left shot, 5-11/172
Carpenter had 11 goals and seven assists for the Spartans. He’s a power forward who shoots it hard and plays hard on the wing.
7. Thomas Milne
Arlington Catholic, 6/2/01, C, left shot, 5-9/160
Milne is a speedster who is able to create offense on the rush and win quite a few races to loose pucks. He had eight goals and seven assists to lead the Cougars in scoring.
8. Aidan Elkins
Austin Prep, 11/18/03, D, left shot, 6-1/190
Elkins has some potential as a defensive defenseman with his size. He’s a solid skater for this level and added two goals and four assists.
9. Ian Worthley
Bishop Fenwick, 2/2/02, C, right shot, 6-1/160
Worthley had 15 goals and 13 assists to lead the Crusaders in scoring. He has good size, is an above-average skater, and shoots it hard. He’ll be a postgrad student at Winchendon next fall.
10. Colby Magliozzi
St. Mary’s, 9/16/02, C, right shot, 5-8/140
Few players in Massachusetts high school hockey last winter had the compete level that Magliozzi exhibited game in and game out. He’s on the smaller side, but he kept his feet moving, hunted pucks and seemingly left it all out on the ice. He finished the season with four goals and 10 assists.
11. Harrison Kinne
St. Mary’s, 6/12/05, D, right shot, 5-11/180
As an eighth-grader, Kinne had a goal and four assists while consistently seeing top-four minutes on the St. Mary’s blue line. Kinne has fairly good feet and decent size. He’s a defender who likely will be a mainstay on this list for years to come.
12. Brady McGrath
Austin Prep, 5/6/03, C/LW, left shot, 5-10/160
McGrath, a converted defenseman, had eight goals and five assists.
13. Kory Ouellette
St. Mary’s, 11/11/02, D, left shot, 5-9/145
Ouellette doesn’t have the offensive acumen of the Kinne brothers, but he’s been a solid blueliner who I’ve noticed for a couple of years now. He had seven assists while being responsible in his own zone.
14. Conor Kelly
Archbishop Williams, 1/3/03, RW, right shot, 5-10/150
Kelly, who played split-season hockey for the Bay State Breakers, was the top performer for the Bishops. He averaged more than a point per game, recording nine goals and 10 assists in 18 outings.
15. Diego Alvarez-Segee
Bishop Fenwick, 3/13/02, RW, right shot, 5-9/140
Alvarez-Segee is a good all-around athlete who is expected to play lacrosse in college. He had 11 goals and 11 assists on the ice this winter.
16. Cameron Martin
Bishop Fenwick, 6/29/02, RW, right shot, 5-9/165
Martin, who has been a goal scorer since his days with Pentucket, had 10 goals and eight assists this winter for the Crusaders.
17. Joe Thibodeau
Austin Prep, 3/28/02, C/RW, right shot, 5-11/170
Thibodeau, who was one of two Cougars to wear a letter as a junior, had six goals and eight assists.
