New Englanders had to wait only three picks into the second round to hear one of their own called at the 2018 USHL Phase I Draft, the portion of the selection process where players born in 2002 are eligible.
Hingham, Mass., resident Stephen Davis was selected with the 19th overall pick by the Madison Capitals. The Boston Advantage 15U defenseman is committed to Boston College.
The Chicago Steel got a potential steal in the fourth round when the 2017 Clark Cup champions picked Timothy Lovell Jr., one of Davis’ teammates with the Boston Advantage. Lovell is a smaller defenseman at just 5-foot-2, but his skating and hockey sense are off the charts. He’s the son of former Maine star Tim Lovell, who is now his coach.
The Steel continued their trend of selecting New England prospects in the fifth round, picking up Northeastern commit and North Attleboro, Mass., native Sasha Teleguine, one of the most explosive skaters in this age group.
Phase II Draft
In the USHL Phase II Draft, league organizations are allowed to pick players born between 1998 and 2002 who haven’t previously been protected, affiliated or drafted in Phase I. West Lebanon, N.H., native Tate Singleton, a Proctor Academy alum, was the first local to be selected after starring with the New Jersey Titans in the NAHL this season. The Army West Point commit was taken with the 13th overall pick in the first round by the Central Illinois Flying Aces.
The Waterloo Black Hawks took another New Englander, Kyle Haskins of Huntington, Vt., with the final pick of the first round. The Selects Academy product is a Michigan State recruit. UMass Amherst commit Jayson Dobay of Weymouth, Mass., and Thayer Academy was selected by the Youngstown Phantoms with the first pick in the second round.
New Hampshire commit Nolan McElhaney was a steal for the Muskegon Lumberjacks in the fifth round. The Natick, Mass., native just finished a stellar career at Cushing, where he put up huge offensive numbers from the blue line.
Two picks have fathers familiar to hockey fans near and wide. Ryan McGuire of Belmont Hill, picked by the Madison Capitals, is the son of NBC Sports analyst Pierre McGuire. Also selected was Nobles forward and Yale commit Ryan Stevens, the son of former NHL star Kevin Stevens (Brockton, Mass.)
