Eight New England players were selected in Monday’s United States Hockey League Dispersal Draft.
The USHL dispersal draft was for the purpose of moving players that were on the rosters and affiliate lists of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders and Madison Capitols for the 2019-20 season. All players with junior hockey eligibility remaining for the 2020-21 season were eligible to be selected by other USHL member clubs. Cedar Rapids and Madison announced last week that they would sit out the 2020-21 season.
The league did not list an order of where players were selected in the dispersal draft. A few league teams opted to draft players that are reportedly going to be freshmen on a college hockey roster this season. There obviously is still some uncertainty with whether or not the college season will go off as currently planned, starting in November.
The Chicago Steel selected UMass Lowell freshman defenseman Ben Meehan, who played last season in Cedar Rapids. The ’01 from Walpole, Mass., played prep school hockey at Dexter Southfield.
The Des Moines Buccaneers selected two New England players, goaltender Derek Mullahy and center Ryan McGuire. Mullahy, another Dexter Southfield alum, played for Cedar Rapids last season but is expected to matriculate to Harvard. McGuire, an ’02 who centered Belmont Hill’s top line in 2019-20, is supposed to play this season in the BCHL with Penticton before going to Colgate.
The Fargo Force picked up Boston College freshman defenseman Stephen Davis, an ’02 who played the last two seasons with Madison. The Hingham, Mass., resident is a product of the Boston Advantage youth program.
The Muskegon Lumberjacks added New Hampshire recruit Alex Gagne, an ’02 from Bedford, N.H. Gagne played for Cedar Rapids last season after a breakout season with the New Hampshire Avalanche Midget organization.
The Sioux City Musketeers drafted two New England players in right wing Doug Grimes and defenseman D.J. Hart. Grimes, an ’02 from Dexter Southfield and Brookline, Mass., is committed to Boston University and was a first-round pick of Cedar Rapids in the USHL Phase II draft back in May. Hart, an Ohio State recruit from Stamford, Conn., had been on Madison’s affiliate list while playing for the North Jersey Avalanche.
The Sioux Falls Stampede added Providence commit Garrett Sundquist, an ’01 from South Glastonbury, Conn. Sundquist had a terrific season with Cedar Rapids last season after playing previously for South Kent Selects Academy.
