Juliano Pagliero will join Norm Bazin's staff at UMass Lowell as an assistant after spending the past three seasons working under Don Vaughan at Colgate University.
Pagliero, 34, is a 2009 alum of Niagara University, where he starred for the Purple Eagles as a goaltender. Following a two-year minor pro career, the Dalroy, Alberta, native jumped into the coaching ranks as an assistant at Division 3 program Utica.
From there, Pagliero made the move to Division 1, working under Paul Pearl and Dave Berard for a season each while at Holy Cross.
Pagliero replaces Cam Ellsworth, who left UMass Lowell to become the head coach of Division 3 powerhouse program Norwich. Pagliero will join Andy Jones as the other assistant on the River Hawks' staff.
The addition was confirmed by Barry Scanlon of the Lowell Sun on Tuesday morning.
Holy Cross hire
According to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal, Holy Cross will name Tommy Hill as its new assistant coach, replacing Brock Sheahan, who left for an assistant position with the USHL's Chicago Steel.
Hill, who played at Ferris State from 2008-2012, has been on Rico Blasi's staff at Miami the past six seasons as the director of hockey operations.
While Hill's hire closes the door on vacant assistant positions at the Division 1 level in New England, several schools are looking for a director of hockey operations. Merrimack, Quinnipiac, and UMass Lowell all seek to fill voids in that area.
Bavis to lead ECHL team
In other area coaching news, the Wheeling Nailers, the ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have tabbed Mike Bavis as their new head coach. Bavis, a former player and assistant coach at Boston University, had been on Jamie Rice's staff at Babson.
Bavis was hired after former Merrimack head coach Mark Dennehy left the Nailers after just two months to become head coach of the Binghamton Devils, New Jersey's AHL affiliate. Dennehy never coached a single game for the Nailers.
