FOXBORO, Mass. — In a rematch of a more lopsided win in Woonsocket Saturday by the home team, the Mount Saint Charles 15-only team traveled to Mass. on Sunday, Sep. 19, and outlasted the Cape Cod Whalers in a spirited 6-3 contest that featured eight different goal scorers and a razor-thin margin in the first half.
It was another example of the quality prospects that the 2006 birth year represents for the region.
James Hagens scored a pair of goals and drove the MSC offense, while Jack Parsons played a strong game in net. Cape Cod got goals from Ethan Cox, Will Doherty and Michael Minchello, while Sam Caulfield manned the Whalers net.
It was 3-2 after the first half after Cape Cod took a 1-0 lead on Cox’s tally off the rush, but Mount came back to take a 2-1 lead and then get a late goal from JJ Monteiro (Hudson, Mass.) to break a 2-2 tie.
Things opened up in the second half and the MSC 15s completed the sweep, but full marks to both teams who played a fast, hard competitive game, and their coaches, who had them ready to go.
Below are the notes and observations on several standouts from the game on both teams.
Mount Saint Charles
James Hagens, C; 11/3/06, shoots left, 5-9/140
Netted two goals but the biggest was the first one to erase a one-goal deficit when he beat Colton Whitfield at the blue line and went in alone, sending a low shot to the far side to make it 1-1. He’s skilled and brings high-end creativity as a dynamic game-breaker. Electric talent.
Sacha Boisvert, C; 3/17/06, shoots left, 6-1/160
Continues to impress with his combination of size, sense, skating, puck skills and spirit (competitiveness). Drives plays and brings a surprising agility and fast burst in small areas to get to pucks and maintain possession. Scored one goal, but did it by going to the net and putting it home on a second and third effort. That kind of score gets the attention of coaches and scouts.
Jack Parsons, G;Â 1/15/06, catches left, 6-2/175
Gave up three, but played a strong game in net, using his size and vision to track and block to make the stops when his team needed them the most. Consistent and looks like he’s on track to be among the best of his peers in net.

JJ Monteiro, LW;Â 1/12/06, shoot left, 5-11/175 (Hudson, Mass.)
Scored the go-ahead goal late in the first half by motoring around a defender with sudden acceleration and then wiring a high shot over Caulfield’s shoulder to make it 3-2. With his size, wheels and hard shot, he has the look of a future junior and D-1 player. Coming into his own.
Luke Gallo, LW;Â 7/1/06, shoots right, 5-7/150
Explosive, dynamic skater gave the Whaler defense all it could handle as he buzzed the net constantly and made some nifty plays to use his speed to get around the back of the net and work the puck out front for quality scoring chances. Uses the 10-2 mohawk skating technique effectively to get through traffic in tight spaces.
Will Felicio, D; 5/15/06, shoots left, 5-9/150 (Holden, Mass.)
Not flashy, but used his excellent feet, eyes and stick to make plays at both ends of the ice. Poised and collected- no real panic to his game and an effective game manager who distributes the puck well, but doesn’t throw it away or turn it over.
Chase Stefanek, LW;Â 8/1/06, shoots left, 6-1/170
Provides steady two-way support with his big body and hard shot. Scored a goal late in the game, but was more impactful on the cycle and disrupting the play in front of the Whalers net.
Andrew Check, D;Â 4/11/06, shoots right, 5-11/165
Another strong game from No. 8, showing off a blend of mobility, physicality and a hard point shot that he is able to get through on net. Has the look of the kind of two-way defender that you win with.
Vinny Ipri, D;Â 6/17/06, shoots left, 5-9/145
Under the radar: Ohio native is an interesting Swiss Army knife on the back end who isn’t as big or skilled as others on he squad, but moves his feet and defends his side of the ice effectively.
Cape Cod Whalers
Will Doherty, RW;Â 2/13/06, shoots right, 5-11/150 (Marshfield, Mass.)
Scored one of his team’s three goals on the day, but his contributions went beyond the score sheet. He was an active worker, disrupting and finishing his hits. He blocked at least one hard shot and played a heavy north-south style game.
Ethan Cox, C;Â 1/25/06, shoots left, 6-0/155 (Westboro, Mass.)
Opened scoring with a nifty goal off the rush as he zoomed up the left side and let a hard shot rip, beating Parsons upstairs. He played with good energy and was one of his club’s more impactful players up front.
Will Dumais, C;Â 2006, shoots left, 6-2/190 (Lunenburg, Mass.)
Didn’t dazzle offensively but has a big frame, showed off some impressive acceleration in his skating and worked hard on both sides of the puck.
Ben Nakata, LW;Â 8/30/06, shoots left, 5-9/155 (West Barnstable, Mass.)
Looks bigger than his listed size. Smart, creative forward whose confidence is growing and is getting more assertive with the puck. Finishes his hits and goes to the net. Good passer who protects the puck and does the little things.
Evan Dresser, D;Â 1/10/06, shoots right, 5-10/180 (Everett, Mass.)
Very good game from No. 21. Moved fluidly and with a purpose. Strong in retrievals and moved pucks with hard passes, making quick reads and playing with urgency. Good stick and excellent recognition to jump passes and turn the play the other way.
Michael Minchello, F;Â 2006, shoots right, 6-0/165 (Braintree, Mass.)
Scored a goal showcasing his rapid release and hard shot. Offensively skilled player who looks good with the way he can elude defenders and create scoring chances. At times his pace wavered- needs more consistency in his game.
Jack Duffy, D;Â 3/15/06, shoots right, 5-7/135 (Walpole, Mass.)
Small but always game- can really fly and not afraid to engage and stick his nose in. Handles the puck well on the move and activates smartly. As he grows a bit and gets stronger, he’ll raise his profile.
Quinn Simmons, LW;Â 8/1/06, shoots left, 5-8/160 (Scituate, Mass.)
Liked his game here. He made a big hit on Boisvert to flatten him in the defensive zone and skated hard up and down the ice. If this is representative of his style, substance and consistency, he’ll be one to watch going forward.
Colton Whitfield, D;Â 4/10/06, shoots left, 6-1/155 (Warwick, R.I.)
Teaching points abound in this game for the reliable two-way defender who got caught on the first Hagens goal trying to reach and swipe at the puck on his own blue line instead of stepping up to play the body on him. Recovered well-shook it off and played a solid game overall. Smart and plays with good awareness, poise and details.
Sam Caulfield, G;Â 8/29/06, catches left, 5-11/150 (Needham, Mass.)
Gave his team a chance in this one, but also allowed a few goals he wanted back. Extremely quick and excellent lateral movement allows him to push, square and set his feet before the shot. He also lost his feet and ended up on his stomach on a few plays allowing goals over his prone form. Strong compete and tools are there for him to be a successful player in split-season and prep play.
Rowan Aggarwal, D;Â 4/7/06, shoots right, 5-8/135 (Barrington, R.I.)
Efficient game from less-is-more, steady defender. He communicates well, looking up and reading plays then directing traffic on the ice. Gets to pucks quickly and moves them up and out.
