Harvard associate head coach and former Holy Cross head coach Paul Pearl is expected to be hired as the new associate head coach at Boston University, according to multiple sources.
New BU head coach Albie O'Connell has been looking to replace his spot as the top assistant on staff following his promotion. Northeastern associate head coach Jerry Keefe was rumored to be in contention, but has since been given a raise at his current school to keep him as part of Jim Madigan's staff.
Len Quesnelle has been active on the recruiting trail for the Terriers, which would indicate he is remaining on staff. Quesnelle, a former head coach at Princeton, just completed his first season as an assistant at BU. The 1988 Princeton alum has also been an assistant at his alma mater and UMass Amherst, in addition to serving as an amateur scout for the Detroit Red Wings.
Mike McMahon of College Hockey News first reported the possibility of Pearl being considered for the assistant job at BU.
Pearl was one of three finalists for the head coaching position at Merrimack this spring along with Keefe and Scott Borek. The latter was eventually hired to be the Warriors’ bench boss, replacing Mark Dennehy.
Originally from Winthrop, Mass., Pearl played college hockey at Holy Cross from 1985-1989. He served as an assistant coach at UConn and Brown before taking the top job at his alma mater for 19 seasons.
Pearl left Holy Cross following the 2013-14 season to join Ted Donato's staff at Harvard, where he's since remained. He's largely been credited with reviving the Crimson program with his work with the team's defensemen. His recruiting efforts also routinely draw praise.
An early candidate to replace Pearl on the Crimson staff is Mike Bavis, who played for Boston University from 1989-1993. Currently an assistant at Babson, Bavis served as an assistant with the Terriers from 1998-2011.
